Open or closed embrace?: The choice is yours.

In tango, the embrace is much more than just a posture; it is the heart of the dance. Choosing between an open or closed embrace influences not only the aesthetics but also the technique, communication, and overall experience of the dance. But what determines this choice? It depends on many factors—our skill level, the music, our partner, and even our mood.

The Learning Journey: From Open to Closed Embrace

Beginners often start their tango training using the open embrace. This allows them to focus on their individual technique—balance, posture, and movement—without relying too much on their partner. It provides the space needed to build a strong foundation before fully integrating with another dancer.

As confidence and independence grow, dancers gradually transition to the closed embrace, where the connection becomes more intimate. This shift requires subtle communication and a deeper awareness of shared movement. By developing both embraces, dancers gain versatility, allowing them to adapt to different styles, partners, and musical interpretations.

Dancing at the Milonga: Connection and Enjoyment from the Start

While in class it's best to progress from open to closed embrace, at a milonga—the social space where tango is danced—the experience is different. Even as a beginner, you can embrace your partner just to walk and enjoy the connection. Walking in a closed embrace is one of the simplest yet most profound ways to feel the essence of tango.

The Embrace: A Personal Choice

The choice of embrace isn’t just technical—it’s personal. It depends on:

The tanda (the set of songs played together) – Some music invites a more intimate embrace, while other pieces encourage openness and playfulness.

Your partner – Every dancer has their own preference, and adapting to each partner enriches the experience.

Your mood and emotions – Some nights, you might crave closeness and connection; other times, you might feel like dancing with more space and freedom.

Your spontaneous desire – Sometimes, the best choice is simply what feels right in the moment.

A Dance of Endless Possibilities

Mastering both embraces allows you to express yourself freely, adapt to different situations, and deepen your experience of tango. There is no right or wrong choice—only the one that makes you feel most connected, both to the music and to your partner.
